I want to read a story written by you.įrancesca: 500 Words is all about writing for your pleasure, this is your story. ![]() Don't try and be somebody else writing the story, don't try and be ‘oh I'm going to be a proper writer and write it in a proper way’. I think the one thing that makes a big difference is, did that story mean something to you, is there some part of you in that story? Is the thing that you are most scared of, or the thing that you most love, or the thing that you most like in that story? That's, that's you, you are the magic ingredient.Ĭharlie: So as a judge, what I am most looking for in a story, and I’ve read a lot of these 500 words stories over the years, the ones that I really like is when the personality of the kid whose written it comes through, using the sort of language that they do in everyday life, they're writing about something that means something to them today or you can see that they've just really gotten into this idea for the story. The winners will be featured in a special 500 Word programme with The One Show, on World Book Day on 7 March 2024.įrank: There's no formula for what makes a fantastic 500 words story: we've seen brilliant horror stories, we've seen brilliant detective stories, we've seen brilliant funny stories. This year, BBC Breakfast will be hosting the competition supported by us on BBC Teach. We are also very lucky that once again the competition has been given the royal seal of approval and has the support of Her Majesty, The Queen You can find out why they are perfect judges here. The judges will be casting their expert eyes over the final 50 stories. We are delighted to say that this year there will be a new addition to the panel, TV legend, children's author and World Book Day ambassador, Sir Lenny Henry. Our brilliant 500 Word judges are back award-winning and best-selling authors Frank Cottrell-Boyce, Francesca Simon, Charlie Higson, and former children’s laureate, Malorie Blackman. Ĭhildren of all abilities are encouraged to use their creativity and imagination to write a story they would love to read without the pressure of having to worry about spelling, punctuation and grammar. This year, the two age categories will be 5-7 year-olds and 8-11 year-olds. Since the competition was first launched in 2011 by Chris Evans on the Radio 2 Breakfast Show, it has received over one million stories from children throughout the UK. 500 Words, the UK’s most successful children’s writing competition has now opened for submissions and will run till Friday 10 November.
